Earlier I posted a brief description of the threefold aim and purpose of not only Ash Wednesday but also the Lenten season [here], namely,
- “to meditate on our mortality, sinfulness, and need of a savior;”
- “to renew our commitment to daily repentance in the Lenten season and in all of life;” and
- “to remember with confidence and gratitude that Christ has conquered death and sin.”
The following resource has been very helpful for me over the years as I think through the meaning of the Lenten season mentioned above: John Piper’s Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die (Wheaton: Crossway, 2004).
This brief book has 50 short chapters, each meditating on a particular purpose that is accomplished by the death of Christ. Since Lent covers 46 days days from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday, this book makes for an excellent devotional for the Lenten season. The entire book can be downloaded for free as a PDF from the Desiring God website.
